Wichita Community Foundation receives $1 million gift to continue Free Saturdays at Wichita Art Museum
Wichita, Kan. – Long-time Wichita philanthropist Colby Sandlian has gifted $1 million to the Wichita Community Foundation to establish an endowed fund to benefit the Wichita Art Museum (WAM) in perpetuity.
The Colby Sandlian – WAM Art Access Fund at the Wichita Community Foundation (WCF) will provide an annual grant distribution to WAM. Through the gift, all Saturday visitors receive free general admission. Sandlian began underwriting Free Saturdays in 2003. To guarantee the continuation, the endowed fund at WCF was created in late December 2018.
“As the relationship manager between the Fund and WAM, WCF will provide the oversight to ensure the gift is made annually to the museum for the purpose Sandlian outlined,” said President and CEO Shelly Prichard. “Cultural experiences play a significant role in our community and this particular gift will allow Wichitans and out-of-town visitors to visit one of our city’s finest assets.”
Patricia McDonnell, director of the Wichita Art Museum, said Free Saturday accounts for nearly half of WAM’s annual attendance.
“Colby Sandlian wonderfully epitomizes a visionary, civic leader,” said McDonnell. “His support assures that anyone can find joy and beauty when they experience world-class art.”
WAM’s Saturday hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Additional information about the Museum can be found at wichitaartmuseum.org.
