Westar Energy, an Evergy company, launches $1 million community fund, $250,000 scholarship program for Central Northeast Wichita
Wichita, Kan. – Westar Energy, an Evergy company, is establishing a $1 million fund at the Wichita Community Foundation (WCF) to serve residents in zip codes 67208, 67214 and 67219. Grants from the Evergy Community Investment Fund at WCF will focus on two key areas: community and environment enhancement and youth enrichment and development.
The company has also announced a $250,000 scholarship program, serving students living in the three zip codes and seeking post-secondary degrees and certifications.
“It is my hope that Westar Energy’s investment in Wichita will help to improve educational outcomes, economic growth, and increase the overall quality of life for citizens in the area,” said Storytime Village President and CEO Prisca Barnes. “I look forward to the opportunity to collaborate with local nonprofits, educational institutions, and community leaders to help provide a needed uplift for neighborhoods, families, and schools.”

The Evergy Community Investment Fund
The Fund criteria were developed by the Evergy Community Investment Advisory Board, which comprises 14 people who live, work and/or serve in Wichita’s District 1.
To apply for funding, nonprofits must be based in, or have a chapter or office, in Sedgwick County, and serve residents of zip codes 67208, 67214 and 67219. The grants will range from $5,000 to $100,000. The Fund will extend through the next five years. Applications will open April 15, 2019, and close June 17 at noon. To apply, go to wichitacf.org.
The Evergy Scholarship Fund
The scholarship program, administered by WCF, will award 10 $1,000 scholarships annually to students who live in zip codes 67208, 67214 and 67219. These awards can be applied to tuition, books or fees for post-secondary education, including technical education and two- or four-year colleges or universities throughout the U.S. Consideration for the scholarship will be given to students exhibiting leadership, community involvement, work experience and awards, as well as financial need and academic performance. Students must be seniors in high school to apply.
