$100,000 from WCF kickstarts community funds to support Wichitans

March 20, 2020

The Wichita Community Foundation (WCF) has mobilized $100,000 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The gift activates two funds: the WCF Emergency Fund to assist nonprofits and the newly-created Stand with Wichita Fund to support individuals. Community contributions are being accepted on wichitacf.org and via mail.

“We have the systems in place to help Sedgwick County citizens and hope others will feel inclined to do the same,” said WCF President and CEO Shelly Prichard. “This is a chance to leverage our resources to help more people in the community during such an unprecedented time.”

WCF Emergency Fund

The WCF Emergency Fund will provide immediate organizational assistance to nonprofits in Sedgwick County whose work is being directly impacted by the COVID-19 virus. While the situation is changing daily, the Fund is not currently providing assistance for basic operations, payroll, capital improvements or lost revenue from planned fundraisers. Applications are available online only

Guadalupe Clinic is the first grantee from the fund, receiving dollars to support the purchase of protective gear for the Clinic staff.

Stand with Wichita Fund

The Stand with Wichita Fund, created in partnership with The Salvation Army, will provide utility assistance to anyone whose employment status has been impacted by the COVID-19 virus.

"The Salvation Army is honored to partner with WCF to stand together to provide utility assistance to families in need in Sedgwick County," said Major Jim Curl, City Commander for The Salvation Army in Wichita.

WCF will manage financial contributions from the community and The Salvation Army’s Emergency Assistance Team will screen applicants and make payments directly to utility companies. Individuals residing in Sedgwick County whose employment has been affected by the COVID-19 virus are eligible for this program.

Funding will be available on April 1. Individuals interested in applying for Stand with Wichita can call The Salvation Army at 316-263-2769 x148.
