History Of The Optimist Memorial Scholarship

The Breakfast Optimist Club of Wichita, Kansas was organized in November 1955 (incorporated 1963) as a part of Optimist International. Optimist Clubs are made up of men and women interested in serving the youth of their communities. Our scholarship program, funded by our fund raising activities has granted scholarships to Sedgwick County students since 1987.

Optimist International was established in 1919, currently composed of 3.200 autonomous Clubs with the mission statement "By providing hope and positive vision, Optimists bring out the best in kids". To learn more about Optimist International and/or to become a member, visit www.optimist.org

Scholarship Eligibility And Application Information

This scholarship may be used to pursue a higher level of education at any accredited junior college, college, university. The scholarship selection committee does not discriminate on the basis of race, creed, religion, sex, age or relationship to an Optimist Club member.

Eligible applicants for the Optimist Memorial Scholarship must:

(1) Be a resident in Sedgwick County during the academic year

(2) Be graduating from high school or GED recipient

(3) Plan to enroll in an accredited two year or four year college in the upcoming academic year

(4) Complete a minimum of twelve (12) credit hours or the equivalent each semester

(5) Be of good character; a credit to his or her chosen profession or vocation and to the community in which he/she lives.

(6) Transcripts must be sent in or the application will be considered incomplete and the application will be invalid.

All completed scholarship applications and Financial Assistance Summary, certified high school and/or college transcripts, and GED certificates (if applicable) MUST be submitted to the Wichita Community Foundation, 301 N. Main, Suite 100, Wichita, KS 67202 by March 15. Incomplete or incorrectly completed applications will be discarded without consideration. This is a one year scholarship. A new scholarship application packet should be submitted to the selection committee each year if continued financial support is desired.
